Taking a Closer Look at Geothermal Heat Pumps

Now that you have become acquainted with how geothermal works in Chicago with the first part of our series, it's time to dig into the pump and how it generates the heat for your home or business. This post will cover the inner workings of a geothermal heat pump, and hopefully shed some light on the energy savings that are trapped beneath your feet.

There are two main parts to a geothermal heat pump that work in symmetry to heat and cool your building: the condenser and the evaporator coil. The condenser will extract the existing heat that is stored in the ground, while the evaporator coil will work with the heat inside the home. Thus, the heat pump works by transporting heat from one part to another depending on whether you need heating or cooling.
